NeuroSpicy (story)

When I was in college, I spent time working at an autism summer program as a counselor. It was a very unique experience and an introduction to autism and the diversity of functioning levels of each individual.

I graduated from the Developmental Services Worker program. As the spiral of learning goes, in 2020 on my personal journey the Buddhist nun I was staying with spoke about how she believed her son had a few autistic tendencies and would send videos to me and we would have discussions about characteristics and behaviors that were neurodiverse.

About two years ago, as I was having a discussion with a couple people I knew that one person I have known for 10 years told me she knew I was NeuroSpicy. I promptly said  “Why didn’t you tell me?” I had no idea. As I told another friend of mine about the conversation she said, “Ya, I know .” It was news to me.

Neurodiversity is an umbrella term that refers to the natural variation in the human brain and its functions.

Recently, I did a lengthy quiz about neurdivergent types. I have always know I was socially not quite mainstream.

Results of the quiz

It was a very interesting read and explanation of what makes me tick. Not quite mainstream in my socialization is an understatement really. I often like to sit and observe, not necessarily participate. (not really participating in life)I have also seen a totally outgoing side of me too. I am much more comfortable around people who enjoy the things I like and we can talk about them. I also understand that there is a connection between what you think people want to hear, whats socially acceptable and not really knowing how to be yourself and not hurt feelings. It’s a whole mix of things.  I sometimes get quite excited and I often talk so much more.  And get loud sometimes. So many variables, they can’t all be talked about.

Upon contemplation of these newly discovered things about myself and the neurospicy folks, I have had a few ideas pop in. What if this is evolution happening as we are observing it? One of the next steps in human evolution is the opening of our minds to create a wider field what we can do, and how we do it. Maybe its why so many have this type of “label”?  Maybe its part of why we are seeing such a push for spiritual awakening? Definitely could be why we don’t fit into an education system that was created a hundred years ago? ADHD also fits in here too. So many questions, so many ways to take a look at this.

Interesting times we live in.

I think that my own findings from the quiz have given me some amazing awarenesses and insights into why I do some of the things I do. I personally don’t think of the Neurodiverse label as something to cling to or a box to put myself into but it has definitely given me a few more ways to know myself.

I don’t feel any different, I feel like I can be more of me.
